Mabel E. Calkins, 88, of Surry, NH passed away peacefully Saturday, May 13, 2017 with family by her side.
She was born in Johnson, VT. She grew up in Windsor, VT with Judge Kenneth H. Robinson and his wife Lucille and four sisters. She graduated from Windsor High School and from Elliot Community Hospital School of Nursing. She served our community, as an Emergency Room RN, at Elliot Community Hospital and The Cheshire Hospital in Keene, NH for 45 years.
She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She cherished most, the time spent with her family and her 4 grandchildren.
She also enjoyed reading, sewing, Sunday morning church services on the radio, lobster rolls, the Red Sox and the Patriots. She adored Morris, the family cat. She loved to be outdoors sitting on the deck in the sun, surrounded by flower gardens, and watching birds and wildlife in her backyard. She fondly credits her longevity to being "an Ol' Vermonter".
She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Greeley of Surry and her son, Richard Calkins of Keene. Grandchildren: Matthew Greeley, Keith Greeley and his wife (Katy), Kimberly Calkins and Kristin (Calkins) Palumberi and her husband Matthew and a great-grandchild, Skylar. 2 sisters: Susan Carter, and Martha Aronstam. She also has several nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. Mabel was predeceased by 2 sisters; Polly Callahan and Priscilla Britton.
In keeping with her wishes there will be no service.
In Lieu of flowers donation may be made to the Surry Fire Dept. 444 Rt.12A, Surry, NH 03431, to honor the generosity of the First Responders who came to her home on many occasions.
